Light Sandy Beaches Favour Hatching Success and Best Hatchling Phenotype of Loggerhead Turtles

چکیده
We conducted a 5-year field (2017–2021) and laboratory study of the relationship between type substrate hatching success, embryonic development, quality hatchlings in loggerhead turtle nests. Our site, island Maio archipelago Cabo Verde, one world’s largest nesting colonies, displays marked heterogeneity sand colouration, with dark, mixed, light sandy beaches. experimentally incubated eggs, comparing different substrates under standard temperature humidity conditions. Females nest all types without preference. However, both experimental revealed significant difference success depending on substrate. Substrate volcanic origin, dark colour, lower amount calcium carbonate, had (HS; 30.3 ± 20.2%) compared to mixed (HS = 46.1 26.5%) or 78.1 18.2%) colour. Eggs that was light-coloured, larger grain size higher carbonate concentration, produced significantly more offspring. Incubation temperatures were substrate, which partially explains this sand. incubation controlled consistently showed Thus, we found not only temperature, but also specific characteristics each determine success. The main predator eggs (the ghost crab Ocypode cursor ) no differences abundance types. results indicate site selection beaches even within same beach conditions affects hatchling physical condition, subsequently reproductive female. can inform conservation programmes management optimise adaptive future scenarios rising global temperatures.

Magnetic Orientation by Hatchling Loggerhead Sea Turtles
Laboratory experiments were conducted to test the ability of loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings (Caretta caretta L.) to orient using the magnetic field of the earth. Hatchlings were tethered to a rotatable lever-arm apparatus which tracked swimming orientation in complete darkness. Hatchlings tested in the earth's magnetic field were nonrandomly oriented with a mean angle of 42°; those tested und...
متن کاملThe magnetic map of hatchling loggerhead sea turtles.
Young loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) from eastern Florida, U.S.A., undertake a transoceanic migration in which they gradually circle the North Atlantic Ocean before returning to the North American coast. Hatchlings in the open sea are guided at least partly by a 'magnetic map' in which regional magnetic fields function as navigational markers and elicit changes in swimming direction a...
متن کاملMagnet-induced disorientation in hatchling loggerhead sea turtles.
Laboratory experiments have indicated that hatchling loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) are able to establish and maintain courses using information from the Earth's magnetic field. In previous experiments, turtles were tested in relatively uniform magnetic fields generated by large coil systems surrounding an orientation arena. In this study, we investigated the orientation behavior of h...
متن کاملThe effects of incubation environment, sex and pedigree on the hatchling phenotype in a natural population of loggerhead turtles
Explaining environmental sex determination (when offspring sex is determined by a property of the embryonic environment) in reptiles remains one of the greatest problems in the field of sex allocation. We test Charnov and Bull’s differential fitness hypothesis in a natural population of loggerhead sea turtles in the field. This hypothesis states that the embryonic environment affects a trait th...
متن کاملAn unsuccessful attempt to elicit orientation responses to linearly polarized light in hatchling loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta).
Sea turtles undertake long migrations in the open ocean, during which they rely at least partly on magnetic cues for navigation. In principle, sensitivity to polarized light might be an additional sensory capability that aids navigation. Furthermore, polarization sensitivity has been linked to ultraviolet (UV) light perception which is present in sea turtles. Here, we tested the ability of hatc...
